Dalai Lama sued for repressing religious freedom
|
|
The lawsuit was initiated by the 13th Kundeling Rimpoche in the high court of Delhi. According to the petition, the Kundeling Rimpoche is a reincarnate Lama believes in "the freedom of worship as guaranteed by the Indian Constitution, and is opposed to the ban on the worship of Dorje Shugden, as being illegal and unconsitutional."
The worship of Dorje Shugden has been controversial in Tibetan Buddhism since the Fifth Dalai Lama, who tried to repress his competitor, who worshipped Dorje Shugden, to claim the title of the de facto ruler of the Tibetan government by painting Dorje Shugden as an evil deity.
In the present petition, Dorje Shugden is said to have been for centuries worshipped as a protector of religion in the Gelugpa tradition, one of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Legend has it that the Dorje Shugden, a human being who lived in the 17th century, was the strongest contender for selection as the Fifth Dalai Lama, but was foully murdered. His spirit then emerged and took on the role of a Dharmapala, who vowed to protect the Gelugpa traditions.
The deity of Dorje Shugden is worshipped in the Indian Buddhist tradition prevalent in Himachal Pradesh, Laddakh, Uttaranchal, West Bengal and Sikkim. Dorje Shugden is also worshipped in all areas of the world where the Gelugpa tradition is followed, such as Bhutan, Nepal, Mongolia, parts of China, parts of the former USSR, various countries in Europe, U.K. and U.S.A.
According to the Kundeling Rimpoche, the Dalai Lama realized in the mid-1970s that he had to reconsider his options after the thawing of Sino-US relations and thus a withdrawal of the funding of the Free Tibet movement by the Central Intelligence Agency of the USA.
"Therefore, in view of the sudden paucity of funds, a stratagem was devised whereby the call for a Free Tibet was to be slowly given up, and in order to divert the opinion of the public (especially Tibetans) from this, a controversy was created regarding the worship of Dorje Shugden," court documents say.
Against such a background, the Dalai Lama was accused to have used his dual role as the temporal head of the Tibetans in exile and as a spiritual guide. He issued numerous statements to the effect that the continuance of the worship of Dorje Shugden would be directly harmful to his health.
In a full-strength propaganda against the worship of Dorje Shugden, the Dalai Lama allegedly adopted a logic that read:
- The Dalai Lama embodies Tibet.
- People who dare criticize the Dalai Lama must be Chinese agents
- The Dalai Lama does not approve of worship of Dorje Shugden
- Therefore Dorje Shugden worshippers must be Chinese agents
"The website of the Respondent No. 4 [the Dalai Lama], www.dalailama.com, from which these Annexures have been downloaded, reveals that the Dorje Shugden issue takes up more webspace than any other issue," the petition filed in court says.
It is argued that the Dalai Lama, through his right-hand man who is a minister of the Tibetan government in exile, refuses to issue various documents, such as identity cards, to the Tibetan refugee community unless the applicants sign a form declaring renunciation of worship of Dorje
Shugden. These forms are not handed out, but are required to be signed there and then.
The Dalai Lama is accused of blackmailing Dorje Shugden worshippers into giving up their religious beliefs. At the same time, Indian citizens who worship Dorje Shugden are reviled and condemned as non-Buddhists and Chinese agents.
Dorje Shugden worshippers are branded as criminals and offenders by the Dalai Lama and his government. This has resulted in a situation where the District Administration is not even prepared to consider any complaints made by the worshippers of Dorje Shugden in respect of the violence committed against them by the supporters of the Dalai Lama. By 1996, Dorje Shugden worship was effectively outlawed.
The sworn affidavit says that Dorje Shugden worshippers have made numerous attempts since 1996 to bring about a rapprochement, but every time they have been spurned by the Dalai Lama, who amazingly still proclaims himself to be a reincarnation of Avalokiteshwara, i.e., the Buddha of Compassion. The acts of the Dalai Lama in this regard are more like that of a totalitarian dictator and not that of a Buddha of Compassion.
Many monks who believed in that practice went and settled in Mundgod in Karnataka, with the express intention of carrying out their religious practices without interference from the Dalai Lama. However, in January, 2008 the Dalai Lama visited the Mundgod area and gave speeches against the worship of the Dorje Shugden. This eventually led to an attack by the followers of the Dalai Lama upon the worshippers of the Dorje Shugden.

sn - I admire your work. And I don't mean to be confrontational. But please allow me to be the devil's advocate for a moment and ask that how reliable is your source for this article. We don't want to accuse the Western media of fabrication if we cannot back up our stories with true facts. The idea that the Dalai Lama is getting sued is unimaginable for me. Are we talking about the same person and within the same context?
hi, anno... the stuff i wrote in this article came from a sworn affidavit that has been filed with the high court of india. check the link in the 2nd paragraph.
and yes, it's unimaginable for me too that the dalai lama is being sued, especially being sued for repressing religious freedom that he's been advocating so hard internationally. and that's why i wrote this article, just to share with the readers there might be another side of him that the mainstream media dare not to touch upon.
By now, some of you - westerners, should realize that not only your media and government 'conceals' a lot of things, just like the Chinese media, but it also went one notch ahead of the Chinese media - fabricate stories with wrongly applied video footages.
I think this is worse than China's Great Firewall because it's 'poisoning' the minds of its viewers just like one respondent here who hides behind anonimity to hurl foul abusive language towards innocent Chinese people who speaks with facts and impeccable reasons because in his small little mind, he couldn't accept the fact that he's been misleaded and duped by his own media and government.
The Chinese have these sayings, "You play with fire, you get burnt by the fire" and "Live by the sword, die by the sword". To prove this point, Obama just got a taste of how he was framed and his words twisted by Hillary's camp.
i hope ppl can discuss a sensitive topic like this one in a civilized way. no racial slurs pls. i have deleted a comment left by anno as a result.
Below is the background story of the conflict, hope this helps to clarify the true side and the dark side:
Tibetans’ demand for religious freedom - Tibetan’s Dorje Shugden Conflict (www.TibetPedia.org)
"Religious prosecution", "Human violation", "Demand religious freedom". If you heard these words from a Tibetan in exile, you would think they're talking about P.R.C. Can you imagine they may refer to the Tibetan government in exile?
In December of 1996, a protest was held in India against a newly issued ban of worshipping "Dorje Shugden" (a.k.a Dholgyal), a respected religious deity Tibetans have been worshiped for 300 years. The ban was issued by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. He regarded the worshipping of such deity harmed the Tibetan cause and his personal health. Anonymous threats were spreaded against anyone who obeys his directness [1]. The Assembly of Tibetan people's Deputies also officially instructed the Shugden worshipper to make "independent" decision after they listened to the teaching of His Holiness and cleared the doubts in their minds (Jun. 1996).
The statues of Dorje Shugden were removed from temples and destroyed. A forced signature event was also held to make people promise to stop the Shugden worship [2]. Those who refused to sign lived their life in great fears. Their names and address and their Children's names and schools were posted in public. People threw stones at their houses. Sometimes their houses got burned. They were treated as outcasts in their communities. Swiss public TV filmed a documentary about the Shugden conflict in 1998 [1]. An interviewed old Lama who expressed his discontent was later attacked by a knife and barely survived. The response from Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile was negative. "Some people have been spreading lies that individuals were harassed and their objects of worship seized for propitiating Shugden, and that government officials were expelled from job, etc. Not a single of these allegations were found to be true"[3]. When Dalai Lama was asked about the violence during an interview by Swiss public TV [1], he insisted that those did not happen, even so after the interviewer told him that he had seen it with his own eyes.
In the Tibetan in exile community in India, it's against the law to object Dalai Lama's teaching and decision [1]. And it's been repeated told that practicing Shugden worship would endanger His Holiness's life. Some Shugden activists were declared murderers and had to go exile again. The exiled Shugden activists often found supports in the west. They have also established their own organization to demand their right of religious freedom. The Tibetan government in exile declared that those organizations are funded and supported by the Chinese authority.
The Tibetan government in exile insisted that they didn't violated religious freedom, since religious freedom does not include the freedom of choosing which deity to worship.
On Feb 13 2008, Tibetan Government in exile tried to resolve the conflict once for all with a vote, which has been taken in 14 monasteries of Gelug establishments. Those who do not want to share spiritual and material relation with Dorje Shugden followers would pick the yellow colored vote-stick. Those who continue Dholgyal worship and who want to share spiritual and material relation with them need explanation of picking the red colored vote-stick. Coincidently, yellow is the color of Tibetan Buddhism (yellow hat religion) and red is usually regarded as the color for the communist China.
Ironically. when Dalai Lama fled China in 1959, it was Dorje Shugden's oracle that told him to run. The specific escaping routes were also told by the oracle [1]. Along the routes chosen by Dorje Shugden, U.S. military and CIA dropped numerous supplies, otherwise he and his body guards could not survive. Some of his body guard were confused after they learned Dorje Shugden was indeed a demon and was trying to harm Dalai Lama's life.
The government has been led by Dalai Lama since 1963. The deputies can be elected but the Dalai Lama is forever the highest government official. Not even a single bill has been passed against Dalai Lama and, according to an interviewed official, never will be. More on that, the passed billed has to be approved by Dalai Lama before it's effective. This again shows how important a fully democratic system is. Even the holiest and greatest living human being can be drowning in absolute power. It's unimaginable how will Dalai Lama and his government bring the Shugden conflicts from a small Indian village of 110,000 Tibetans, to a 2400,000 square kilometers land of 6 million Tibetans.

The link you provided is to a google documents page, lol...could've been fabricated by any angry chinese youth
Anyway, thanks for writing the article. The mainstream media has been ignoring the Dorje Shugden for the past few years.

Statement from Shugden Society:
http://www.shugdensociety.info/historyEvents.html
In March 1996, H.H. the Dalai Lama announced a ban against the worship of the Buddhist deity Dorje Shugden, declaring that such worship posed a “danger to his life and the cause of Tibet.” The exile government then began to enforce this ban. Houses were searched and a signature campaigns were carried out. People were coerced into signing their name, agreeing to abandon all worship of this deity from then on. Those refusing to sign were openly declared enemies to the cause of Tibet and as endangering the life of the Dalai Lama. The consequences were dire for those who stood by their faith: employees of the exile government were pushed out of their jobs and children of uncompromising parents were denied school attendance. Even the constitution of the exile government was adapted to this change of policy: “The presiding judge of the Judiciary Commission ... must not be a worshipper of Gyalchen Shugden ...”
